2024 Bioinformatics Data Analysis Hackathon

The 2024 Bioinformatics Data Analysis Hackathon took place on Saturday 17 August, hosted in collaboration with SUDATA, COMBINE and GraftAI. A total of 72 contestants were split into two streams and worked in teams of 4-5. Groups in the Algorithms Stream needed to build an accurate classifier to identify kidney graft rejection from RNA-seq data, whereas Bioinformatics Stream participants analysed RNA-seq data from a range of organ transplants, and associated disease outcomes.

After a full day of coding and learning, supplemented with pizza and snacks, $600 worth of prizes were awarded to two winning teams in each stream! In the algorithms stream, the winnings teams achieved an AUC of 0.703 and 0.667 respectively. And the Bioinformatics Stream winning teams presented their research findings, identifying a variety of genes and pathways that contribute to graft rejection, fibrosis and delayed graft function.
