Opportunities for undergraduate students

The Sydney Precision Data Science Centre is a research hub to all interdisciplinary researchers in data-intensive science, and we have several opportunities for undergraduates to learn and undertake research training in data science. Below is a set of opportunities and typical projects that members of SPDS lead and supervise across multiple schools and faculties across the University.

Faculty of Science | School of Mathematics and Statistics | Charles Perkins Centre

My research focuses on utilising recent advancements in single-cell RNA-sequencing and spatial genomics to handle large datasets of cells and features. An undergraduate embarking on a project with me can expect to develop innovative data science techniques and algorithms to answer biological questions. This includes enhancing computational modelling, improving data visualisation and interaction, and ensuring software scalability.

Faculty of Science | School of Mathematics and Statistics

I develop statistical methods to address modern challenges in high-dimensional and complex data analysis with applications in agriculture and biometrics. I am interested in feature selection, robustness, stability and multilevel predictive modelling. A student working with me can expect to create interpretable, reliable statistical methods and open-source software to help scientists and researchers make more informed decisions. If you are interested in applied statistics, methodological development, or interdisciplinary collaboration, I am happy to discuss potential research opportunities.

Faculty of Science | School of Life and Environment Science | Charles Perkins Centre

I am interested in the effects of nutrition on organismal biology. In particular, I undertake projects where gains in knowledge can be made through the application of novel quantitative methodologies. I am equally happy to work with experimental data collected in model and non-model organisms and epidemiological data in humans. I have strong expertise in quantitative research synthesis (e.g., meta-analysis), where my research extends to methodological developments. I offer student projects in any of these research spaces.

Requirements: Completion of any module that teaches R
