2024 COMBINE Symposium a success with 200 attendees!

The COMBINE Symposium marks an annual gathering of bioinformatics and computational biology students across the country. This year, the students at the Sydney Precision Data Science Centre had the pleasure of hosting the COMBINE Symposium on 4 November at the University of Sydney, with a record 200 participants!

The event kicked off with a keynote address by Professor Gordon Smyth, followed by several sessions involving 12 talks covering protein structures, multi-omics and AI in biology. We also had an exciting set of 13 fast-forward presentations, where speakers had 90 seconds to pitch their research project.

The afternoon session included a diverse careers panel with Emma Rath, Jimmy Breen, Saskia Freytag, and Yatish Jain, who shared their career journeys and insights into the current state of bioinformatics. The symposium concluded with a poster session showcasing 55 posters, and a joint welcome reception with the professional and postdoc events. Finally we went across the road to the Royal Hotel for a social night!

The organisers want to thank the COMBINE Symposium Committee for all their efforts into making the event a success, and the sponsors for their generous contributions.
